Daily EncouragementSample

Some translate the last words as, “a single cubit to his height?” However, our Lord’s chief point still comes across, whichever way we read it. He is telling us not to worry and is emphasizing the folly of doing so.
It is interesting to notice the things he specifically mentions - food, drink, clothing and the future. These are areas of perpetual anxiety for pagans. Our Lord describes them as running after “all these things” (Matt. 6:32). Anxiety about tomorrow is often connected with food and clothing - “what shall I wear to the wedding?” The ultimate fear of the future is the fear of death (Heb. 2:14-15). It is a sad fact that some Christians, who have been delivered from worrying about drink and death, are too anxious about food and clothing, and the worse offenders are often those who have ample of both.
The folly of worrying for the Christian is that in doing so he is forgetting and ignoring his heavenly Father - the One who feeds “the birds of the air” and clothes “the lilies of the field” in garments more beautiful than any which Solomon ever wore. How much more will he care for his children, who are of more value to him than any bird or flower!
