Daily EncouragementSample
The truth emphasized here is a law of all life. Our Lord underlined it: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Luke 6:38). Paul does the same as he urges the Corinthians to give: “Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously” (2 Cor. 9:6). Seldom does the Apostle quote the actual words of the Lord Jesus, but in this case he does: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).
The working out of this principle is seen in many ways. Those who take time to visit the sick frequently leave them feeling that they are benefited more than those they came to see. Congregations moved by the word little know how greatly the preacher has been blessed in his own soul.
Again the area of hospitality bears ample witness to this truth. Paul was encouraged in just observing Philemon’s hospitality; how much more did he encourage those by whom he was entertained, including Philemon himself (Phm. 7). The blessing which comes to ourselves and our children through entertaining the saints is beyond measure!
