Daily EncouragementSample
The ultimate encouragement is the sure and certain hope of eternal life. Nowhere in the Old Testament does that hope shine more brightly than in this psalm. Christ is its fulfilment in more ways than one. For David, as for us, Christ Jesus is our hope (1 Tim. 1:1).
Christ has made known to us the path of life. He himself is the way, as he is the resurrection and the life (John 14:6; 11:25-26). It is he who “has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Tim. 1:10), and in him we already possess the life eternal (John 5:24). “You will make known to me the path of life” is the alternative reading of this Psalm. How often in the very moment of their departure believers have been given a vision of glory and have enjoyed a wonderful entrance into the heavenly home. The child of God has no need to fear the act of dying any more than death itself.
Christ’s own presence is the chief joy of the life to come and its eternal pleasures are found at his right hand. More than this we do not need to know here below - in any case, mere human language would be inadequate to tell us more. “At home with the Lord” (2 Cor. 5:8), we shall not be disappointed!
