FCA: The Relentless Devotional For CompetitorsSample
Fix Your Eyes on Me
Adrienne Saxon
READY:
“Keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith.” – Hebrews 12:2a
SET:
Now that I am a ‘retired’ collegiate athlete, my new hobby is triathlon races. Competing against the clock as an individual is very different than the team sports I have always played. However, I found it natural to compete with the friends I raced with. The day before my first race, my friends and I went on a swim in the lake, in order to prepare for the swim portion. My two friends completely blew me away, and I was mentally out of the zone!
During the hours leading up to the race, I had to fight the temptation to believe the negative thoughts that were overtaking my mind! I knew I had taken my eyes off the prize and had begun focusing on the competitors around me. And if I was preoccupied looking to the left or right during the race, my time would suffer tremendously. I needed to have a single focus—the finish line.
Similarly, I find myself tempted to look to the left or to the right in my Christian walk, instead of fixing my eyes on Jesus. At times I compare my relationship with Christ to someone else’s. This hinders my growth in the Lord.
Jesus tells us to remain in Him and He will remain in us. In fact, He tells us that we can do nothing apart from Him! It is Christ, alone, that should be our single focus. Everything else is a mere distraction.
GO:
- Have you ever been taken out of your game because of distractions around you? What happened?
- Are you currently being tempted to focus on something or someone other than Jesus?
- If so, share this temptation with another believer and ask them to hold you accountable to keeping your eyes on the Lord.
WORKOUT:
John 15:1-17
2 Corinthians 10:12
OVERTIME:
Father, help me to focus on you alone! Help me to throw off any hindrances from following hard after You. Amen.
