Philippians: Joy in Christ

DAY 5 OF 5

Contentment and Generosity in Christ

When I worked in corporate at a large bank, the end of the year brought with it “benefits season.” Everyone on the team would review their options for the coming year—health insurance plans, retirement contributions, and even stock investments. The company offered to match employee contributions up to a certain amount, and naturally, a little friendly competition emerged among coworkers. Conversations often turned to who was contributing the most or planning best for their financial future.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with wise financial planning. In fact, it’s good stewardship. But I began to notice something shift in me. The more I focused on accumulating, the less I thought about giving. It was no longer just about preparation—it became about possession. I started to prioritize retaining over releasing. Can you relate?

That’s why I love Paul’s words in Philippians 4. He writes from a place of deep personal experience—not as someone who’s always had plenty, but as someone who has learned the secret of being content whether he had a lot or very little. And what was his secret? Christ. Christ gave him strength. Christ was his source. Christ was enough.

Paul also takes a moment to celebrate the generosity of the Philippian church. Their giving wasn’t out of surplus; it was out of sacrifice. They gave because their hearts were rooted in Christ, and Paul reminds them that God would supply all their needs—not according to the economy, but according to His riches in glory.

We live in a culture that praises accumulation, but the gospel invites us to live lives of open hands. When our hearts are anchored in Christ, we don’t give to earn favor or to look generous—we give because we already have everything we need in Him.

Respond to God’s Word:

Practice generosity today—give time, encouragement, or a gift to someone in need. Trust God to supply all you need.

My prayer is that your family as a whole thrives and lives in the joy of the Lord. There's something that has helped grow our family in the Word. Each week, we receive a short guide with a Bible verse, a worship song, seven daily conversation questions, and a short prayer for family time. It’s helped us be intentional with our family in the Word. If you’re interested in the “Leading Your Family Weekly Guide,” you can get it here: https://www.faithfamilyweekly.com/
