Men of the Heart

DAY 7 OF 7

An Overflowing Heart

To my brothers,

What a privilege it is to have been able to walk with you through a journey of the heart this week!

We’ve talked about the importance of a believing heart, a lowly heart, a tender heart, a worshipful heart, and finally, a pure heart.

I remind you today that all of life flows from your heart, so if you want to follow Jesus well, you must keep and guard your heart diligently.

Yet, here’s the thing—you can only do this with the help of the Holy Spirit.

In Jeremiah 17:9-10, the Lord tells us that the human heart is deceitful and desperately sick, so no one can understand it—except for the Lord Himself. It’s the Holy Spirit—and only Him—who is able to search all things, including the depths of our hearts (1 Corinthians 2:10; Proverbs 20:5).

Yet, the Lord’s promise to us goes beyond His omniscience, His ability to know and search our hearts, and His ability to make everything known to us as well.

He promises He’ll give us a new heart, as we discussed previously.

Plus, He doesn’t stop there.

In today’s passage, Jesus tells us that within anyone who believes in Him, rivers of “living water” will flow out of Him. As believers, our new hearts, which He puts within us, will overflow…with Him.

The Holy Spirit—our Helper—is always molding our hearts so that He Himself can flow freely from them and into our lives without barriers or distortion. He wants to flow freely from us in every conversation, every decision, and every moment.

The promise is that we will think like Him, feel like Him, and ultimately be like Him at the deepest level of our being.

It’s from that place that we can accurately and authentically represent Jesus to a fallen and broken world of hurting people.

Fully yield your heart to the work of the Holy Spirit, my boys. Hold nothing back from Him, hide nothing from Him, and do not lean on your own strength or understanding in your journey of cultivating a heart that pleases Him. Give your whole heart to Him, and trust Him to mold, develop, and shepherd your heart.

Fight for a heart that overflows with Him, my brothers.

Prayer: To close our week, I would like to echo the prayer of David in Psalm 139:23-24 (ESV):

Search me, O God, and know my heart!

Try me and know my thoughts!

And see if there be any grievous way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting!

All of my heart is yours, my Lord, so I yield all of me to You, and I will let You lead me however You desire. I trust You to create in me a heart that overflows with all that You are, including Your love, Your joy, Your peace, and Your life. Amen.

Reflection: Is there any part of the heart that you have kept from the Lord? What must you do to yield that part of your heart to Him, too?
