Overcoming Emotional Struggles and Spiritual Battles

DAY 1 OF 3

The Struggle with Self-Will: Surrendering to God’s Plan

Have you ever wrestled with your own desires, wondering if they align with God’s will? How can we truly surrender our self-will and trust God’s plan for our lives?

Surrendering to God’s will can be one of the most difficult challenges we face. Our natural tendency is to follow our own desires, seeking what we think is best for us. However, true spiritual growth comes when we align our will with God’s. The Bible teaches that God’s ways are higher than ours, and when we surrender to His plan, we experience true peace and purpose.

1. Jesus in the Garden: The Ultimate Surrender

In Matthew 26:39, we see Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, facing the agony of the cross. He prays, “Not as I will, but as You will.” Despite His personal anguish, He surrenders His will completely to the Father, choosing God’s plan over His own.

Life Lesson: Jesus exemplifies the ultimate surrender, even in the most painful circumstances. We are called to follow His example, choosing God’s will over our own, especially in moments of struggle.

2. Jonah’s Resistance: Running from God’s Plan

Jonah’s story (Jonah 1-4) highlights the consequences of resisting God’s will. Jonah initially ran from God’s calling to go to Nineveh, refusing to surrender to His plan. Eventually, after much turmoil, Jonah obeyed, and the people of Nineveh repented.

Life Lesson: When we resist God’s will, we may face unnecessary struggles. Surrendering to God’s plan brings peace and fulfillment, even when we don’t understand it.

3. Paul’s Transformation: From Self-Will to God’s Calling

Before becoming an apostle, Paul (then Saul) was passionate about persecuting Christians. In Acts 9:3-6, he encounters Jesus on the road to Damascus and is blinded. Jesus asks, “Why are you persecuting me?” Paul’s self-will was broken, and he surrendered his life to God’s plan, becoming one of the most influential apostles.

Life Lesson: Paul’s transformation shows us that surrendering our self-will can lead to a radical change, aligning our lives with God’s higher purpose.

4. Practical Ways to Surrender Self-Will

  • Pray for Guidance: Consistently ask God for direction, acknowledging His sovereignty over your life.
  • Submit to God’s Timing: Trust that God’s timing is perfect, even when it differs from your plans.
  • Let Go of Control: Surrender your plans and desires, allowing God to work in ways that are beyond your understanding.
  • Seek Accountability: Find trusted individuals who can pray with you and help you stay focused on God’s will.

Final Reflection

Surrendering our self-will to God is not a one-time decision but a continual process. It requires trust and obedience, recognising that God’s plan for us is greater than our own.

How can you surrender your will today and trust God’s plan for your life?
