Titus: Do What God SaysSample

A godly man
If you don’t have a target, you won’t know what to aim for, and you’ll have no idea whether you’re hitting the mark. When it comes to being a man of God, Scripture gives us a target to pursue. The problem in our culture isn’t just that manhood is confused, it’s that it’s often undefined.
In Titus 2, Paul gives instruction for what godliness looks like for different groups in the church. When it comes to men, both older and younger, he’s clear: character matters. Older men are to be self-controlled, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and have endurance (v. 2). Younger men are to be self-controlled and live with integrity. In a world that often worships youth and sidelines the elderly, Paul calls older men to stay engaged; to lead, mentor, and model the way of Jesus. He reminds younger men that godliness is not automatic. It must be pursued.
All through the Scriptures, we are told that righteousness takes training. For example, 1 Timothy 4:7 tells us, “But have nothing to do with pointless and silly myths. Rather, train yourself in godliness.”
This isn’t about personality. You don’t have to be loud or outgoing. But you are called to be strong in faith, steady in your convictions, and serious about godliness. The world offers distorted pictures of manhood—domination, detachment, passivity, or performance. But the Bible gives us a better one.
Here’s a clear, biblical target: A man of God loves sacrificially, leads courageously, lives with integrity, and follows Jesus humbly.
- Loves Sacrificially – Like Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her (Eph. 5:25). Whether it’s your wife, kids, friends, or church family—are you laying down your preferences and pride out of love?
- Leads Courageously – Not with bravado, but with strength, faith, and conviction. Biblical leadership means stepping forward in responsibility, not shrinking back in fear (Joshua 1:9, 1 Cor. 16:13–14).
- Lives with Integrity – What you say you believe should match how you actually live. At home, at work, at church—your character speaks louder than your words (Titus 2:7–8, Prov. 20:7).
- Follows Jesus Humbly – Denying yourself and walking daily in obedience. Humility isn’t weakness; it’s strength submitted to Christ (Micah 6:8, Luke 9:23).
You won’t become this kind of man by accident. It takes time. It takes intention. It takes God’s grace. But you were created for this. And whether you’re 18 or 80, it’s never too early—or too late—to aim for the kind of manhood that honors Jesus.
Reflection Question: Do you have a clear picture of what it means to be a godly man? Which of these four areas—loving sacrificially, leading courageously, living with integrity, or following Jesus humbly—do you most need to grow in right now, and why?
Prayer: Lord, help me be the man you created me to be. Teach me to love sacrificially, lead with courage, live with integrity, and follow you with humility. Forgive me where I fall short, and give me strength to grow in grace. Shape my life to reflect Jesus, and use me to build up others along the way.
