A Minute For Mommy

DAY 20 OF 31

Can We Have a Mommy Day Today?

One morning, Clay asked me the sweetest question. He said, "Can we have a mommy day today?" He explained this was a day where we didn't have to go anywhere, not to pre-school, not to mommy's Bible study, not to Walmart, not anywhere. This was a day where we just stayed at home and spent time together. I was touched and thrilled by his request and, of course, I said, "Yes!"

Until Clay asked for this special day, I didn't realize how busy the boys and I were. Although I am a stay-at-home mom, we are out and about a lot. We usually do productive activities like grocery shopping, playgroups, or church activities, but all of those activities occur outside our home. On this day, Clay reminded me how important it is to just play and have fun at home. We didn't need to spend so much time running from one activity to the next. I was amazed what I learned from my little boy. Children teach us so much.

It is important to notice the value Christ placed on little children. Christ knew they needed attention from him. He loved children with all his heart and did not fail to make time for them, no matter how busy he was. As a mom, we must follow his example. Our children need attention from us too, unhindered attention.

Moms, I want to encourage you to take time out of your busy schedule just to hang out with your little ones. Make pancakes in fun shapes or letters (a favorite at our house.) Build a castle out of blocks. Make a paper airplane and fly it around the house. Get a little messy and finger paint. Shoot hoops or throw a football. Ask your children what they want to do. I know you will make memories your children will never forget.

Tell God today how much you love your children and how thankful you are for them. Ask God to help you organize your schedule so that you really do "stay-at-home." If you work outside the home, ask God to help you find creative ways to spend time with them, on your lunch break, before school, before they go to bed. Allow God to help you grow closer to your children as you spend quality time with them every day. I pray your "Mommy Days" will mean as much to you and your children as they mean to me.
