All of us exist in environments where we must obey to please a particular standard or authority (parent, boss, law enforcement, etc.). Often, we develop a similar posture toward God—we think we have to be perfect for Him to save us. But salvation isn’t granted based on our actions. God grants us salvation by His grace.

Reflect

As Kyle said, “Paul shows us that the promise and power of the gospel . . . is received by faith.” In other words, the gospel is a gift we receive and not something we achieve. Do you find it challenging to simply receive the gospel as a gift instead of working to earn it? If so, why?

In what ways do you seek—consciously or subconsciously—to earn what’s been given to you freely in the gospel?

In many ways, the major struggle of the Christian life is learning to live in the freedom we have been given rather than returning to the “comforts” of our old chains. Where do you struggle with freedom today? In what ways are you tempted to return to the chains of your life before Christ? How could you focus on the truth that you are a child of God today?

Even though Christ has set us free, our former way of life—our “prison”—often feels more comfortable and familiar. But it’s still a prison. The good news of the gospel is that through faith in Christ, you have been set free. You’re now a child of God.

Spend some time reflecting on all the ways you’ve experienced freedom in Christ since becoming a Christian and write them down. Then, take time to pray and thank God for setting you free.
