When it comes to hearing the voice of God, will God ever contradict His Word? If we believe that we have heard God speak, but it is not in alignment with Scripture, what does that mean?

The belief that we can hear from God outside of the words of God all started back in the Garden of Eden. God said to Adam and Eve that they would die if they ate from the tree of knowledge. Unfortunately, Adam and Eve chose to listen to the voice of the devil rather than the voice of God. Mankind desired knowledge, but with this human knowledge came the assumed right to judge between good and evil. This created an independence of heart and a separation from the place of God’s voice being the sole influence.

As believers, we must ensure that we are not falling into the same trap of wanting to be independent from God and His word. We can totally underestimate the power of our own desire and the power of human persuasion. Attachments that we make to people, things, or ideas can influence us to interpret the Word of God according to our own thoughts and desires. Therefore, we must go back to what God has already established in Scripture.

There is a correct way to handle God’s Word, and this is important when it comes to our perspective on hearing the voice of God. The Bible is the truth. It is immutable, infallible, and indisputable. We must always submit our interpretation of what we "think" God is saying to the solid foundation of God’s Word.

Only the will of God, according to the Word of God will lead you into the place of truth.
