Working Through the Bible

DAY 8 OF 42

The story of the Bible begins with God. Genesis 1:1 opens: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” The first thing we see in the Scriptures is God going to work. It’s as if the Bible starts with a “bring your human to work day.” The author invites us to join God in His efforts and observe the work He does. And what a work it is!

God has created something incredible. Think about what He did to make the heavens and the earth. Consider the artistry, imagination, effort, and joy that He must have invested in this creative endeavor. God is not merely a worker but a brilliant creator who crafts a masterpiece.

As the story unfolds, we witness his work taking shape. In rapid succession, God calls forth different elements of creation: “Let there be light.” “Let there be an expanse.” “Let the earth sprout vegetation.”

Time and time again, he creates things that didn’t exist just moments before. At the start of the story, we observe that the world is disordered. It's chaotic and lacking structure. However, God steps into that chaos and brings order to it. This is the work he performs. If you consider the various kinds of work we do, most of it is the same whether we are raising kids, volunteering, starting a business, writing code, mowing lawns, or serving food. We enter a chaotic situation and bring order. As the Bible begins, we learn the essential truth that God is a worker. God is, at his core, creative, artistic, meticulous, and expressive. God works.

When we work, we partake in God’s nature. We do as He does and emulate our Father. We work because God is a worker. The readings for this week highlight the creation story, where we learn the kind of work God enjoys doing.
