Day 4: Cultivate Awe
Awe is the fertile soil where faith flourishes. It is the posture of a heart captivated by God’s greatness, much like a garden thriving under the right conditions. Psalm 33:8 invites us to stand in awe of the Lord, a call to cultivate this essential aspect of faith intentionally. Awe doesn’t come naturally in a world crowded with distractions—it must be nurtured, much like a field requires care to produce a harvest.
In Jeremiah 33:9, God promises that His goodness will inspire awe in the nations. His provision and mercy act like streams of water nourishing the parched soil of our hearts. Reflecting on His faithfulness fills us with wonder and reverence, softening the hard ground of doubt and distraction. Awe grows when we recognize that God is not just powerful but profoundly good, working all things for His glory and our ultimate good.
Cultivating awe begins with lifting our eyes. Psalm 121:1-2 urges us to look beyond the immediate and behold the Creator of heaven and earth. Like a farmer surveying the vastness of their land, we must step back from our day-to-day routines and marvel at the bigger picture of God’s majesty. Awe is found in the ordinary and the extraordinary. A sunrise, the delicate design of a flower, or the whisper of God in His Word—all are seeds of awe waiting to take root in our hearts if we pause long enough to notice.
In cultivation, preparation matters. Awe transforms us when we intentionally clear the clutter of life to make room for God’s glory. Like pulling weeds that choke out healthy growth, we must remove distractions, negativity, and busyness that crowd our ability to see God’s greatness. Instead, we plant seeds of awe through worship, Scripture, and gratitude, allowing these practices to turn our focus to Him.
Transformation is the ultimate harvest of cultivating awe. 2 Corinthians 3:18 reminds us that as we behold the glory of the Lord, we are changed into His image from one degree of glory to another. This transformation is not instantaneous; it is the slow, steady growth of a heart aligned with God. Each moment spent marveling at His greatness is like sunlight and water to the seeds planted in our hearts, encouraging deeper roots and stronger faith.
Today, consider how you can cultivate awe in the garden of your heart. Are there weeds—distractions, doubts, or self-focus—that need to be cleared away? Where can you plant seeds of awe by noticing God’s hand in creation, reflecting on His Word, or recounting His goodness in your life?
Awe is the rich soil where worship grows. As you cultivate this field, let the majesty of God inspire you, transform you, and lead you into deeper trust. Stand in awe of the One who holds the universe together yet tends to the smallest details of your life. Let Him cultivate awe in you, drawing you into greater wonder and worship.
