The Temptations of JesusSample

Love deserts?
Psychologists refer to the "Dunning-Kruger Effect," a phenomenon in which individuals with limited knowledge of a subject believe they can speak like experts. Ironically, as they gain more knowledge, they often become more cautious and humbler in sharing their opinions. A similar experience can happen in our Christian lives. We may know Jesus as our Lord and confidently declare, "I will never leave you," often questioning those who think differently from us.
Over time, however, we come to realize that the key lies in remaining humble and acknowledging that we don’t have all the answers. There may come a moment that shatters us—such as a loss, a crisis, or the consequences of sin—that leaves us feeling exposed and vulnerable. In these desert moments, we discover God’s grace and goodness, which lead us to redemption and forgiveness. As a result, we choose to live from a place of gratitude and humility as redeemed sinners, rather than getting stuck in the arrogance of someone who lacks compassion for themselves and others. From this perspective, we can better support others who are navigating their own deserts. While entering the desert may be beyond our control, learning from that experience is entirely within our reach.
The desert awakens us, sharpens our senses, frees us from burdens, and teaches us to value companionship. It can lead to radical changes that elevate our lives. Deserts help us affirm our purpose. However, we must be cautious not to go alone or stagnate as victims or victimizers. Note that it is the Holy Spirit Himself who intentionally leads Jesus into the wilderness. One might wonder, what could the God-man possibly learn in the wilderness? Yet, I believe that the Spirit revealed to Jesus, who knew no sin, how the enemy seeks to exploit human weakness.
What desert are you navigating? Are you stuck in denial, blaming others, or going in circles because you refuse to listen to what God wants to tell you? I know that ships must endure storms, but they are built to conquer the horizon. Similarly, deserts, silences, and winters can be gifts from God to transform us through adversity. However, let us never forget the ever-present God who has called us to keep moving forward.
Father, elevate my thoughts. Help me see beyond the crisis that hides the horizon in thick fog and show me how you can shape my character for eternity through this wilderness.
