The Triumph of the Cross: Christ’s Victory Over DeathSample

Christus Victor: Christ The Conqueror
The first Christians did not see Jesus only as the Lamb who was slain for our sins but also as the Conqueror who defeated the powers of darkness. This idea, Christus Victor, was the dominant view of the cross in the first centuries of Christianity.
Colossians 2:15 (ESV) describes how Jesus “disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame” His death was not a moment of weakness, but a triumph over evil. The resurrection confirmed that He reigns as King.
In the modern Western church, the emphasis is often on the forgiveness of sins as the primary meaning of the cross. While true, it’s only one part. The early church also saw the cross as the climax of a cosmic battle. Jesus did not only die to save us personally but to overcome darkness itself. His resurrection proves that He is stronger than death and that the enemy no longer has lasting power over those who believe in Him.
Perhaps you sometimes struggle with the feeling that evil has the upper hand in this world or in your life. But what an encouragement it is to realize that Jesus has already won! This means that we do not have to fear, no matter how heavy the battle feels. His victory is our victory.
What would your life look like if you lived every day from this truth?
How does the image of Christ as Conqueror influence your faith? In what areas of your life do you need victory?
