Making Hard Choices

DAY 3 OF 3

After receiving wisdom from God, Solomon faced his famous test – the case of two mothers claiming the same child. His handling of this situation provides us with practical steps for implementing wisdom in our own process of making choices. Yet beyond this well-known story lies a sobering lesson about the comprehensive application of wisdom in our lives.

Solomon's approach to the case demonstrates four crucial steps in making choices. First, he listened carefully to the issues presented, taking time to hear both sides of the story. Then, he clarified the facts, ensuring he understood the situation fully before proceeding. Third, he tested the situation – what we might call a "litmus test" – to reveal the truth. Finally, he made a decisive judgment based on the wisdom God had given him.

Solomon was a man of true wisdom. However, there's a cautionary aspect for us to consider in Solomon's story as we look at the choices he makes in his later years. While he received extraordinary wisdom from God to be used in every area of his life, the responsibility to apply that wisdom remained his choice. Historical records show that while Solomon governed the nation with remarkable wisdom, he often failed to apply the same wisdom in managing his household. This reveals a crucial truth: wisdom involves both the ability to discern what is best and the strength of character to act upon that knowledge.

In my personal life, this aspect of Solomon's story has deeply convicted me. It reminds us that we cannot compartmentalize God's wisdom, applying it in some areas while neglecting it in others. The choices we make in our public lives should align with those we make in our private lives. The wisdom God grants us for leadership should also guide our personal relationships and family decisions.

In addition, making any choice should be saturated with prayer from beginning to end. In James 4:8 it says, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." Prayer isn't just about speaking to God – it requires active listening for His response. In James 1:22 it says, "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." When He grants us wisdom, we must commit to applying it consistently across every area of our lives, not just in the major decisions but in the daily choices that shape our character and influence our legacy.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." These passages of scriptures and Solomon's story serves as a reminder to us that true wisdom comes from complete dependence on God and acknowledging Him in every choice we face, including the hard ones.
