Abraham's Worship

DAY 2 OF 5

We arrived at the main story of this Reading Plan. Isaac has something terrifying waiting for him… God orders Abraham for Isaac to be sacrificed. What?! How can a Loving God order a human being to do something so cruel and gruesome?

Although it seems like Abraham does not show any emotional reaction, I cannot imagine he wouldn’t have had an emotional, humane, response: sacrifice a Gift from God that you waited for so long. How do you think Abraham felt?

As Abraham leads his son to the altar, knife in hand, fully prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice, God suddenly intervenes, putting a stop to the entire act. This seems to have been God's way of testing Abraham's faithfulness, and Abraham passes the test. While I may not fully understand why God chose this particular method, I recognize the deeper and symbolic significance behind it. In the upcoming days we will dive deeper into this, but first, let’s unpack this specific verse:

“...I and the boy will go over there and worship...” (Gen. 22:5, ESV).

The key word here is worship, which is exactly what this entire Reading Plan is about. What exactly is worship? Our present association might be: a church band taking the audience into a higher, Godlier, or Holier atmosphere. Well… I don’t think that there was a band ready to “worship” on the Mountain of Olives. Still, Abraham went there to worship. As we see from this story, it’s possible to worship differently than we are used to.

The Hebrew word used here is “SHACHAH”, which means “to lay flat on your face down on the ground.” A symbol of humiliation and surrendering.

So, no, worship is not about praising beautiful words supported by music, but the moment of making the conscious choice to surrender, dedicate, and obey God. That's what worship means in the essence.

Will you worship God today? What burdens, struggles, or sin can you surrender to Him today? I encourage you: Pray about it and leave it in God’s Hands.
