DAY 6 OF 7

The Power of Trusting God in the Game

As a sports minister or athlete, you don’t have to face the challenges of competition alone. Jesus said, “For people, this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.” This truth applies not just to life in general but also to how you play, act, and grow, both on and off the field.

For sports ministers: When guiding athletes to embody Christlike qualities—humility, love, grace, joy, and peace—many might feel overwhelmed. They think, “How can I compete fiercely and still display these virtues?” The reality is that on their own, they can’t. Just as Jesus pointed out to the rich young ruler that it’s impossible to save oneself by one’s own efforts, it’s also impossible for athletes to truly reflect Christ in their sport without God’s help. The good news is that with God, it is possible.

Your role is to help athletes understand that they need to shift their trust. Rather than relying solely on their abilities, they must learn to depend on the Holy Spirit to work in and through them. This means inviting God into their training, games, and relationships with coaches and teammates. Just as a child grows through stages of learning and practice, an athlete grows in their ability to live out their faith in the competitive arena.

For athletes: When you’re asked to play your sport like Christ, it might seem impossible. Competing with humility, showing love to teammates and opponents, and finding joy even in tough losses is not easy. But remember, you don’t have to do it on your own. With God, it’s possible.

In Mark 9, Jesus says, “All things are possible for one who believes.” This isn’t about achieving the impossible in a physical sense, like making every shot or winning every game. Instead, it’s about the transformative power of faith. When you trust in Christ rather than relying solely on your own strength, you can play with integrity, respect your coaches and officials, and treat others with kindness even in the heat of competition. For athletes, understanding this truth is liberating. You don’t have to be perfect or have all the answers. You just need to trust the One who is with you, molding and shaping you through every challenge.

Remember that you are never alone in this journey. God is with you, guiding, empowering, and transforming you. Whether you’re leading others or competing on the field, place your identity and trust in Christ, knowing that through Him, all things are indeed possible.
