Finding Freedom: The Lord’s Prayer

DAY 3 OF 7

Your Kingdom Come

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray "Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven," He was teaching them - and us - a revolutionary way to approach God. This isn't just a casual request; it's a profound declaration of surrender and trust.

But what exactly are we praying for when we say these words? The kingdom of God is His perfect rule and reign, a reality where His will is fully embraced and expressed. In heaven, there's no resistance to God's will. Everything aligns perfectly with His desires. When we pray for His kingdom to come, we're asking for that same reality to manifest here on earth.

This prayer begins to transform us when we realize it's not just about global change, it's deeply personal. We're inviting God to establish His kingdom rule in our own hearts, relationships, and daily decisions. It's saying, "Lord, I want Your perfect will to be done in my life, just as it is in heaven."

Let's be honest… this isn't always easy. Our natural tendency is to pray "my kingdom come, my will be done." We often approach prayer with our own agenda, telling God what we think should happen. But Jesus teaches us to start with surrender, acknowledging that God's ways are higher than ours.

When we truly pray for God's kingdom to come, we're choosing to align our hearts with His purposes. We're saying "yes" to His plans, even when they differ from our own. This transformation of our hearts is itself a glimpse of His kingdom coming to earth.

Reflect:

  • In what areas of your life do you find it hardest to pray "Your kingdom come"?
  • How might your prayers change if you truly sought God's will before presenting your requests?
  • Take time to surrender specific situations to God's kingdom purposes today.
