The Canaanite Mom: Persistence and Boldness in Prayer
Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment. —Matthew 15:28, NIV
When I was a young child, I was very ill. My mom brought me from doctor to doctor, begging them to find out what was wrong with me, but they repeatedly sent us home without any answers. My mom tells me that she has never prayed more than during this time of our lives. I often think about how defeating it must have felt to plead with God in the darkest hours of the night and receive no clarity or guidance.
However, after praying for months with our church, the sixth doctor we went to immediately found the problem and rushed me into emergency surgery, saving my life.
As moms, we often face challenges that seem beyond our ability to solve. Whether it’s a physical illness, an emotional struggle or a spiritual battle, we can feel powerless when our children are hurting. I know my mom did.
The Canaanite mom in Matthew 15 understood the desperation of a mother whose child needed help. Her daughter was tormented by a demon, and no earthly solution could fix the problem. Despite being a Gentile with no claim to Jewish traditions or promises, this mother boldly approached Jesus, calling out for his mercy.
At first, Jesus did not reply. But she persisted, yelling, “Lord, help me!” (Matthew 15:25, NIV). Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted” (Matthew 15:28, NIV). The Bible tells us that her daughter was healed at the very moment he spoke.
Sometimes, the answers to our prayers don’t come immediately. Like the Canaanite woman, we may need to persist and keep trusting in God’s goodness. Faith isn’t about having all the answers or seeing instant results; it’s about believing that God is able, even when the circumstances seem impossible.
Let this story encourage you to boldly approach God on behalf of your children. Whether the need feels small or overwhelming, trust that your prayers can unleash his power in their lives.
Challenge: This week, boldly pray for an area of your child’s life where they need God’s intervention. Bring your request before God with confidence. If he can part the Red Sea, feed 4,000 people with just seven loaves of bread and a few small fish, and save humanity with the blood of his perfect son—just think of the miracles he has waiting for you and your family.
