The Breath of LentSample

“My sin is always before me.” How true does that statement ring? Typically, we do not need to be told what we have done wrong. We don’t need to be shown our shortcomings. They are always before us. Our victories begin to fade not long after they occur, but our weaknesses, oh, those love to remain boldly in the forefront of our minds.
The writer of the Psalm goes on to declare that the Lord is right and justified as the judge, basically saying, “Yes, I did mess up, and yes, I do deserve the judgment that is coming my way.” Being aware of ourselves, our actions, and our shortcomings is important. But the Lord doesn’t ask us to dwell or wallow in our transgressions. He came to set us free, to bring us from death into life. He teaches us wisdom and desires faithfulness from us.
Inhale: Create in me a pure heart, O God
Exhale: and renew a steadfast spirit within me
