Unrestrained Service: A Devotional for Nonprofit Leaders and VolunteersSample

Day 2 – Working With Diverse Groups
Can you imagine what our world would be without volunteers? Volunteers are the axis upon which the globe revolves, as much of the work completed by nonprofit organizations could not be done without them. When we make a decision to volunteer, oftentimes, we have done the legwork and chosen an organization that aligns with our passion and skillset. Unfortunately, building relationships with people from different backgrounds is a challenge that may throw a stick in the spokes of the Cinderella ending to our volunteer story.
While volunteering with diverse groups of people can be rewarding, it can also be extremely challenging. When people from a variety of cultures, beliefs, backgrounds, experiences, competencies, and socioeconomic statuses gather together, the result may be a melting pot for creativity, ideas, and solutions, but all of these differences can also become a recipe for mishaps. Nonetheless, diversity is essential to the success of any nonprofit work.
So, in order to avoid potential problems, nonprofit leaders must foster an environment of awareness, acceptance, and opportunities to build relationships. Volunteers can also help in this plight by remaining open to learning about differences such as cultural awareness, generational gaps, and economic disparities. Taking the time to become educated about the cultural norms and traditions of those with whom we serve, as well as understanding the different ways of working and relating to others based on generation gaps and being sensitive to other people’s financial situations can change chaotic, contentious circumstances into orderly, peaceful interactions.
During biblical times, there were many examples of prejudices, such as those that existed between the Jews and Gentiles. Jews referred to Gentiles as dogs and viewing them as inferior and unclean would have nothing to do with them. Regrettably, even in modern times, this intolerance to others outside of our circle and culture still exists, but behaviors such as these dishonor God and deny His mercy and love to all!
Although it requires intentionality and consistent effort, there are immense rewards to volunteering, but the bounty of embracing diversity is invaluable. Beyond building compassion, empathy, and stronger communities, we can form meaningful relationships and lasting connections.
As the people of God, it is important that we make every attempt to set aside differences and live peaceably with all men. In doing so, not only do we honor God, but we open the door to opportunities to make a great impact in the lives of others and further enhance our own lives with rich and productive experiences.
