The Passion of Christ

DAY 5 OF 15

Death of the Messiah: Behind the Text

The object of crucifixion was more than death. Both Jews and Romans wanted to achieve something else.

The Curse in Deuteronomy 21

If someone guilty of a capital offense is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole, you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse.

Deuteronomy 21:22-23 (NIV)

In accordance with this passage from Deuteronomy, Jews considered anyone who hangs on a tree to be cursed. This is connected to concerns of purity but is also associated with the idea of shame. Jesus on the cross, among many other things, is a naked body in public. Ever since the Garden of Eden, nakedness and shame have gone together. Hanging a body in public is how a person is displayed as a symbol of their curse before God, but then they're brought down. They're brought in. They're not supposed to be left out.
