 <div class="p">1The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3He asked me, &#8220;Son of man, can these bones live?&#8221;</div><div class="p">I said, &#8220;Sovereign Lord, you alone know.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Then he said to me, &#8220;Prophesy to these bones and say to them, &#8216;Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! 5This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath#37:5 The Hebrew for this word can also mean wind or spirit (see verses 6-14). enter you, and you will come to life. 6I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.</div><div class="p"> 9Then he said to me, &#8220;Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221; 10So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet&#8212;a vast army.</div><div class="p"> 11Then he said to me: &#8220;Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, &#8216;Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.&#8217; 12Therefore prophesy and say to them: &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. 14I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="p">1The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar. 2He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.</div><div class="p"> 3As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits#47:3 That is, about 1,700 feet or about 530 meters and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. 4He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. 5He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in&#8212;a river that no one could cross. 6He asked me, &#8220;Son of man, do you see this?&#8221;</div><div class="p">Then he led me back to the bank of the river. 7When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river. 8He said to me, &#8220;This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah,#47:8 Or the Jordan Valley where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh. 9Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live. 10Fishermen will stand along the shore; from En Gedi to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets. The fish will be of many kinds&#8212;like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea. 11But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt. 12Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">28</div><div class="s1">Jesus Has Risen</div><div class="p"> 1After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.</div><div class="p"> 2There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.</div><div class="p"> 5The angel said to the women, &#8220;Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples: &#8216;He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.&#8217; Now I have told you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus met them. &#8220;Greetings,&#8221; he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, &#8220;Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Guards&#8217; Report</div><div class="p"> 11While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, 13telling them, &#8220;You are to say, &#8216;His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.&#8217; 14If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.&#8221; 15So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.</div><div class="s1">The Great Commission</div><div class="p"> 16Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18Then Jesus came to them and said, &#8220;All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.&#8221;</div>

He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Disciples&#8217; Grief Will Turn to Joy</div><div class="p"> 16Jesus went on to say, &#8220;In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 17At this, some of his disciples said to one another, &#8220;What does he mean by saying, &#8216;In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,&#8217; and &#8216;Because I am going to the Father&#8217;?&#8221; 18They kept asking, &#8220;What does he mean by &#8216;a little while&#8217;? We don&#8217;t understand what he is saying.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, &#8220;Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, &#8216;In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me&#8217;? 20Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.</div><div class="p"> 25 &#8220;Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 29Then Jesus&#8217; disciples said, &#8220;Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 31 &#8220;Do you now believe?&#8221; Jesus replied. 32&#8220;A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.</div><div class="p"> 33 &#8220;I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">20</div><div class="s1">The Empty Tomb</div><div class="p"> 1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, &#8220;They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don&#8217;t know where they have put him!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus&#8217; head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 10Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene</div><div class="p"> 11Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus&#8217; body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.</div><div class="p"> 13They asked her, &#8220;Woman, why are you crying?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;They have taken my Lord away,&#8221; she said, &#8220;and I don&#8217;t know where they have put him.&#8221; 14At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.</div><div class="p"> 15He asked her, &#8220;Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?&#8221;</div><div class="p">Thinking he was the gardener, she said, &#8220;Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16Jesus said to her, &#8220;Mary.&#8221;</div><div class="p">She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, &#8220;Rabboni!&#8221; (which means &#8220;Teacher&#8221;).</div><div class="p"> 17Jesus said, &#8220;Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, &#8216;I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: &#8220;I have seen the Lord!&#8221; And she told them that he had said these things to her.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Appears to His Disciples</div><div class="p"> 19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, &#8220;Peace be with you!&#8221; 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 21Again Jesus said, &#8220;Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.&#8221; 22And with that he breathed on them and said, &#8220;Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone&#8217;s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Appears to Thomas</div><div class="p"> 24Now Thomas (also known as Didymus#20:24 Thomas (Aramaic) and Didymus (Greek) both mean twin.), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, &#8220;We have seen the Lord!&#8221;</div><div class="p">But he said to them, &#8220;Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, &#8220;Peace be with you!&#8221; 27Then he said to Thomas, &#8220;Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28Thomas said to him, &#8220;My Lord and my God!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 29Then Jesus told him, &#8220;Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Purpose of John&#8217;s Gospel</div><div class="p"> 30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may believe#20:31 Or may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.</div>
