Every Home a Foundation: A Theology of HomeSample

Give All Glory to God
Our daily routines contain some of the most repetitive, mundane, unseen things we do. This is where we are most likely to take shortcuts, to choose the easier route. But there is something satisfying about tending a home with excellence, not because people see you, but because God gave a gift and you wish to glorify Him with it. But what does it mean to glorify God in the mundane work of mopping floors, when no one is there to see the difference or no one notices but you?
One answer is found in an epistle of Paul, this one to the church at Colossae: “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:17). Paul told us that everything—word and deed—is done in the name (authority) of Jesus and is worthy of thanksgiving. This includes the labor of every daily task!
Shifting our mindset about home, its purpose, and the everyday routines we take for granted can be a difficult process. Have grace for yourself as you consider the ways you’ve thought about home before. It’s never too late to make a change. There is hope for joy in joyless tasks, hope for goodness in boring places, hope for a life well-lived in the unseen moments. The spiritual discipline of home is a practice in the glory of God: a glory made visible by humble hands in humble places.
Reflect
Do you work heartily at home out of love for your Father, the giver of all good gifts? Or do you look at the work of the home as an obligation—a dirty, necessary duty to be tolerated and endured? If the latter, how can you shift your mindset?

About this Plan

A biblical theology of home frees us to not just enjoy the place we live but to live with purpose and dignity. Theology simply means the study of God: who He is and how He interacts with the world. A theology of home—and the stewardship, hospitality, diligence, and food within it—is simply God’s perspective and heart for how His children experience homelife.
