94x50: Discipleship on the CourtSample

Inclusivity
Basketball, through globalization, has transcended borders and cultures, spreading across the globe. Even in the NBA, we witness the remarkable growth of international players shaping the game's landscape. Recent MVPs like Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, and Giannis Antetokounmpo represent a diverse array of countries outside the USA, showcasing the inclusive nature of basketball.
Within the confines of the court lies an opportunity to reach people of all races, religions, and backgrounds by living out our faith in action with the messages of the gospel and Christ's love. Just like the inclusivity of the game knows no bounds, so too does the unity we find in Christ. Galatians 3:28 reminds us, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” In this unity, we discover an opportunity to reach people from all walks of life through discipleship.
Understanding discipleship as a journey of learning to love and follow Jesus, we recognize its essence in walking out our faith in tangible ways. Like a coach guiding a player, we should aspire not only to help individuals become better versions of themselves but also to foster a personal relationship with Jesus and aid them in discovering their God-given purpose. Matthew 4:19 captures this essence as Jesus said to his disciples, “Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.” We are all called to make disciples, to share the good news of Christ's love and salvation with others.
In fact, we can’t change people; all we can do is influence them, and even the best version of ourselves still falls short of the glory of God. Discipleship is about becoming more like Jesus, not merely adhering to religious practices.
Just as basketball welcomes players of all backgrounds and abilities, the gospel extends an invitation to everyone, without exception. Romans 10:14-15 emphasizes the importance of sharing the gospel, stating, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ’How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!‘“In God's kingdom, there are no barriers or divisions—only unity in Christ.
Reflection:
- How can you intentionally build relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, both on and off the court?
- Reflect on moments when you’ve excluded someone, intentionally or unintentionally. How can you change your actions to demonstrate Christ’s inclusivity?
- What steps can you take to share the gospel with someone who doesn’t know Christ?
