Prepare/Be still:

Get comfortable. Breathe in slowly. How are you coming to this devotional today? Name your desires before the Lord.

Matthew 3:1-3

“In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was, ‘Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of heaven is near.’ The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said, ‘He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him!’”

Consider:

Many events in our life require preparation. Just as we prepare for special occasions like holidays or vacations by setting aside time, planning, and adjusting our schedules, we are invited to prepare ourselves for Jesus' daily coming into our lives as well as His second coming. How do we do this? We can look at John the Baptist as an example.

John the Baptist was sent by God to prepare the way for Jesus. Clearing the road for the Lord included repentance, which involves a fundamental change of direction—turning away from self-reliance, pride, or sin and turning towards God and recognizing that the Kingdom of God was near.

This preparation is not just about what we do but about how we orient our hearts. Are we actively making room for Him, or are we too distracted by the busyness of life to notice? Just as a host prepares their home for an important guest, we are called to prepare our hearts to receive Jesus, to make space for Him in our thoughts, actions, and relationships.

Ponder:

How do you prepare the way for the Lord in your life? Are there any thoughts or behaviors that the Lord is asking you to change?

Where do you need healing from Jesus? Where do you long for Jesus to make all things right?

How are you making space for the Lord in your life today?

Activate:

• As you sing this song, allow the Lord to bring to mind any areas that He is wanting to make a way towards you.
• Allow some time to listen to the Holy Spirit today. Ask Him if there is anything in your life that is grieving or quenching Him as well as places in your life that are delighting Him.
• As you clean your physical spaces, notice any spiritual parallels with preparing a pathway for God.
• Spend some time worshiping the Lord today. Sing, create art, write or speak who God is. Tell the Lord specific places in your life that you would like Him to make a way towards.
• Make space in your calendar this week to spend some extra time with God. You can read Scripture, journal, pray, sit quietly and listen, sing or walk in nature. Make a way in your mind and heart to recognize His presence in your ordinary life.
