House of David

DAY 1 OF 5

YOUR PERSONAL SHEPHERD

For generations, David’s Psalms have offered comfort and peace in a chaotic world. For many of us, Psalm 23 is the crown jewel. Next to the Lord’s Prayer, this is probably the best-known and best-loved passage in the Bible. A passage worth putting to memory. Because if you truly know the Lord as your shepherd, everything changes.

Whatever you may be dealing with in your life right now, whatever problems and dilemmas and impossible situations you woke up with this morning, remember this: The almighty Creator of the universe is your shepherd.

Let that sink in a moment.

I love how David said, “The Lord is my shepherd.” He could have said, “The Lord is a shepherd,” and that would’ve been true. The Lord is indeed a shepherd, but David personalized it and said, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1).

When David wrote the words of Psalm 8, he was probably out with his flock at night, looking up at the stars: “When I look up into the night skies and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you have made—I cannot understand how you can bother with mere puny man, to pay any attention to him!” (Psalm 8:3–4). But God does pay attention. He pays very close attention to every detail of your life.

David wrote later in Psalm 27:10, “Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.” As a matter of fact, David’s dad, Jesse, didn’t even acknowledge him when the prophet Samuel showed up to meet the family (see 1 Samuel 16). But David knew that even if his family overlooked him, he had a personal shepherd who never would.

God wants to be your shepherd through all of life.

I can’t think of anything in this world better than that.

Lord, you are my shepherd. Thank you for caring so much about every detail of my life. Amen.

About this Plan

House of David

In today’s crazy, uncertain world, we long for a place of peace and safety. This week’s reading plan explores several of David’s psalms, reminding us of God’s presence with us as Shepherd, Defender, Provider, Comforter, and Guide. Even when David faced physical battles, times of sorrow, inner fears, and his own sin, he turned to God in humility, wonder, and faith—and found there a true refuge.
