         <div class="label">6</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Nazirite</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="NUM.6.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Moses, </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="NUM.6.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">&#8220;Speak to the Israelites and say to them: &#8216;If a man or woman wants to make a special vow, a vow of dedication to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> as a Nazirite, </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="NUM.6.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">they must abstain from wine and other fermented drink and must not drink vinegar made from wine or other fermented drink. They must not drink grape juice or eat grapes or raisins. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="NUM.6.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">As long as they remain under their Nazirite vow, they must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, not even the seeds or skins.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="NUM.6.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="NUM.6.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;During the entire period of their Nazirite vow, no razor may be used on their head. They must be holy until the period of their dedication to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> is over; they must let their hair grow long.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="NUM.6.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="NUM.6.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Throughout the period of their dedication to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, the Nazirite must not go near a dead body. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="NUM.6.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Even if their own father or mother or brother or sister dies, they must not make themselves ceremonially unclean on account of them, because the symbol of their dedication to God is on their head. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="NUM.6.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Throughout the period of their dedication, they are consecrated to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="NUM.6.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="NUM.6.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If someone dies suddenly in the Nazirite&#8217;s presence, thus defiling the hair that symbolizes their dedication, they must shave their head on the seventh day&#8212;the day of their cleansing. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="NUM.6.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Then on the eighth day they must bring two doves or two young pigeons to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="NUM.6.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">The priest is to offer one as a sin offering</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">6:11 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">purification offering</span><span class="ft">; also in verses 14 and 16</span></span></span><span class="content"> and the other as a burnt offering to make atonement for the Nazirite because they sinned by being in the presence of the dead body. That same day they are to consecrate their head again. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="NUM.6.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">They must rededicate themselves to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> for the same period of dedication and must bring a year-old male lamb as a guilt offering. The previous days do not count, because they became defiled during their period of dedication.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="NUM.6.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="NUM.6.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Now this is the law of the Nazirite when the period of their dedication is over. They are to be brought to the entrance to the tent of meeting. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="NUM.6.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">There they are to present their offerings to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">: a year-old male lamb without defect for a burnt offering, a year-old ewe lamb without defect for a sin offering, a ram without defect for a fellowship offering, </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="NUM.6.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">together with their grain offerings and drink offerings, and a basket of bread made with the finest flour and without yeast&#8212;thick loaves with olive oil mixed in, and thin loaves brushed with olive oil.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="NUM.6.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="NUM.6.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The priest is to present all these before the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and make the sin offering and the burnt offering. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="NUM.6.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">He is to present the basket of unleavened bread and is to sacrifice the ram as a fellowship offering to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, together with its grain offering and drink offering.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="NUM.6.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="NUM.6.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Then at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the Nazirite must shave off the hair that symbolizes their dedication. They are to take the hair and put it in the fire that is under the sacrifice of the fellowship offering.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="NUM.6.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="NUM.6.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;After the Nazirite has shaved off the hair that symbolizes their dedication, the priest is to place in their hands a boiled shoulder of the ram, and one thick loaf and one thin loaf from the basket, both made without yeast. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="NUM.6.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">The priest shall then wave these before the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> as a wave offering; they are holy and belong to the priest, together with the breast that was waved and the thigh that was presented. After that, the Nazirite may drink wine.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="NUM.6.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="NUM.6.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;This is the law of the Nazirite who vows offerings to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> in accordance with their dedication, in addition to whatever else they can afford. They must fulfill the vows they have made, according to the law of the Nazirite.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Priestly Blessing</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="NUM.6.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="NUM.6.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Moses, </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="NUM.6.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">&#8220;Tell Aaron and his sons, &#8216;This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="NUM.6.23"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="NUM.6.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;&#8198;&#8220;The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> bless you</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="NUM.6.24"><span class="content">and keep you;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="NUM.6.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="NUM.6.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> make his face shine on you</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="NUM.6.25"><span class="content">and be gracious to you;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="NUM.6.25"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="NUM.6.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> turn his face toward you</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="NUM.6.26"><span class="content">and give you peace.&#8221;&#8198;&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="NUM.6.26"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="NUM.6.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">&#8220;So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.&#8221;</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">13</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">A Linen Belt</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="JER.13.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to me: &#8220;Go and buy a linen belt and put it around your waist, but do not let it touch water.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JER.13.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">So I bought a belt, as the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> directed, and put it around my waist.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JER.13.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="JER.13.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">Then the word of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> came to me a second time: </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="JER.13.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">&#8220;Take the belt you bought and are wearing around your waist, and go now to Perath</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">13:4 </span><span class="ft">Or possibly </span><span class="fqa">to the Euphrates</span><span class="ft">; similarly in verses 5-7</span></span></span><span class="content"> and hide it there in a crevice in the rocks.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="JER.13.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">So I went and hid it at Perath, as the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> told me.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="JER.13.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="JER.13.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Many days later the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to me, &#8220;Go now to Perath and get the belt I told you to hide there.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="JER.13.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">So I went to Perath and dug up the belt and took it from the place where I had hidden it, but now it was ruined and completely useless.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="JER.13.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="JER.13.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Then the word of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> came to me: </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JER.13.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">&#8220;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says: &#8216;In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JER.13.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">These wicked people, who refuse to listen to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts and go after other gods to serve and worship them, will be like this belt&#8212;completely useless! </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JER.13.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">For as a belt is bound around the waist, so I bound all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah to me,&#8217; declares the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, &#8216;to be my people for my renown and praise and honor. But they have not listened.&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Wineskins</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JER.13.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="JER.13.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">&#8220;Say to them: &#8216;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, the God of Israel, says: Every wineskin should be filled with wine.&#8217; And if they say to you, &#8216;Don&#8217;t we know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JER.13.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">then tell them, &#8216;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says: I am going to fill with drunkenness all who live in this land, including the kings who sit on David&#8217;s throne, the priests, the prophets and all those living in Jerusalem. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JER.13.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">I will smash them one against the other, parents and children alike, declares the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. I will allow no pity or mercy or compassion to keep me from destroying them.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Threat of Captivity</span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JER.13.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JER.13.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Hear and pay attention,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JER.13.15"><span class="content">do not be arrogant,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JER.13.15"><span class="content">for the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has spoken.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JER.13.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JER.13.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Give glory to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JER.13.16"><span class="content">before he brings the darkness,</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JER.13.16"><span class="content">before your feet stumble</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JER.13.16"><span class="content">on the darkening hills.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JER.13.16"><span class="content">You hope for light,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JER.13.16"><span class="content">but he will turn it to utter darkness</span></span></div><div class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="JER.13.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">If you do not listen,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span labor?</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="JER.13.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="JER.13.22"><span happened to me?&#8221;&#8212;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="JER.13.22"><span class="content">it is because of your many sins</span></span></div><div change his skin</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JER.13.23"><span class="content">or a leopard its spots?</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JER.13.23"><span class="content">Neither can you do good</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JER.13.23"><span class="content">who are accustomed to So they asked him, &#8220;You aren&#8217;t one of his disciples too, are you?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="JHN.18.25"><span class="content">He denied it, saying, &#8220;I am not.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="JHN.18.25"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="JHN.18.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">One of the high priest&#8217;s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, &#8220;Didn&#8217;t I see you with him in the garden?&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="JHN.18.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Before Pilate</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="JHN.18.27"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="JHN.18.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="JHN.18.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">So Pilate came out to them and asked, &#8220;What charges are you bringing against this man?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="JHN.18.29"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="JHN.18.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">&#8220;If he were not a criminal,&#8221; they replied, &#8220;we would not have handed him over to you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="JHN.18.30"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="JHN.18.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">Pilate said, &#8220;Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="JHN.18.31"><span class="content">&#8220;But we have no right to execute anyone,&#8221; they objected. </span></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="JHN.18.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="JHN.18.32"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="JHN.18.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="content">Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, &#8220;Are you the king of the Jews?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="JHN.18.33"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="JHN.18.34"><span class="label">34</span><span class="content">  </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Is that your own idea,&#8221;</span></span><span class="content"> Jesus asked, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;or did others talk to you about me?&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="JHN.18.34"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="JHN.18.35"><span class="label">35</span><span class="content">&#8220;Am I a Jew?&#8221; Pilate replied. &#8220;Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="JHN.18.35"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v36" data-usfm="JHN.18.36"><span class="label">36</span><span class="content">Jesus said, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v36" data-usfm="JHN.18.36"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="JHN.18.37"><span class="label">37</span><span class="content">&#8220;You are a king, then!&#8221; said Pilate.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="JHN.18.37"><span class="content">Jesus answered, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="JHN.18.37"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="JHN.18.38"><span class="label">38</span><span class="content">&#8220;What is truth?&#8221; retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, &#8220;I find no basis for a charge against him. </span></span><span class="verse v39" data-usfm="JHN.18.39"><span class="label">39</span><span class="content">But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release &#8216;the king of the Jews&#8217;?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v39" data-usfm="JHN.18.39"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v40" data-usfm="JHN.18.40"><span class="label">40</span><span class="content">They shouted back, &#8220;No, not him! Give us Barabbas!&#8221; Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.</span></span></div>

Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="JHN.19.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JHN.19.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge&#8217;s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JHN.19.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JHN.19.14"><span class="content">&#8220;Here is your king,&#8221; Pilate said to the Jews.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JHN.19.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JHN.19.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">But they shouted, &#8220;Take him away! Take him away!
