Day 6: I Have a Purpose
Human beings fight to find their Purpose more than anything else in their lives. Some people strive to find Purpose by looking for a place, a position, or a person who will fill their emotional tank so that they feel good about themselves. If we believe what we do determines who we are, we will always strive to do more to be significant. All those good things—even our God-given abilities and talents—are parts of who we are, but they do not define us entirely.
When we understand that God made us in His own Image (Genesis 1:26), we embrace the certainty that our true Purpose reflects our design—to be like God. That means we get to reign over His Creation, be fruitful and multiply, collaborate with one another, and steward the Earth together.
When Adam was created in the Image of God, to be like God, he was created with significance. Adam had a Divine Purpose, and so do we!
Even in a sinful world, God hasn’t stopped creating Mankind with Purpose. God said this to the prophet Jeremiah: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5, NKJV). When Jeremiah doubted His ability to accomplish the Purpose God placed on him, God reminded Jeremiah that He knew all about him.
Just like Jeremiah, God gave you Purpose when He formed you.
The problem is that we pursue things outside of God to find our Purpose in an effort to gain control over our lives. But control tightens its grip on us, ultimately leaving us feeling out of control. God recognized this condition within us—our sinful nature constantly striving for significance, security, and belonging. That’s why He sent the Messiah, the Savior, to overcome the world and restore what we cannot achieve on our own.
God clearly outlines the most important Purpose for all believers—to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-20). There’s nothing more significant than making a disciple of Christ and helping someone become a disciple. Instead, we sometimes become so focused on doing “good” things that we start to confuse them with our true Purpose, just like Martha did. Martha thought her Purpose was to serve Jesus by being a good host and preparing a meal, but Jesus told her she was missing what He really desired from her—to be with Him (Luke 10:38-42).
I want you to be like Mary when you question your Purpose. Sit at the Feet of Jesus and let Him speak to you. Let Him bring great freedom to your heart and restore your sense of Purpose.
Jesus came to regain what was lost - our place of belonging in His Family, our security knowing we would have Eternal Protection and Provision, and our significance understanding that we matter. This is where Purpose begins and ends in our life.
Make this your declaration today: I believe I have a Purpose!
