The Bible for Young Explorers: MarkSample
Why did Jesus spit on people?
Blindness was common in Bible times. In this passage, Jesus healed a blind man by spitting on his eyes. Another time, Jesus made mud with saliva and dirt and rubbed it in a man’s eyes (see John 9). Why? Perhaps Jesus was copying the way God made Adam from the dust of the ground. Maybe it was because saliva was considered the ‘oil of life.’ So, using spit was a symbolic act, a physical action that everyone would remember. Either way, it’s not an excuse for spitting at people!
The meaning of Messiah
The word ‘Messiah’ means the anointed king. It’s the same as ‘Christ’ but in a different language. So ‘Christ’ is not Jesus’ surname. It’s a title that says he is God’s King.
