Shatter the Stigma

DAY 3 OF 5

You Are Never Too Broken For God

We have all heard, seen, or read testimonies of individuals who lived profoundly sinful lives before accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and undergoing a radical transformation. Murderers. Adulterers. Criminals. The selfish, the egotistical, the idol worshippers. The list goes on of people who might have been considered too broken for salvation, too lost to be saved. Yet, as Scripture reminds us in the parable of the lost sheep, leaving the ninety-nine to find the one lost sheep is central to following Jesus; everyone is precious and worth saving.

When you’re battling a mental health issue like depression or anxiety, it’s easy for your sense of self-worth to evaporate. This feeling can be even worse if you’ve endured trauma, as your lack of self-worth often becomes deeply tied to your experiences.

When I was in the depths of depression, the last thing I wanted was to help myself. I felt I didn’t deserve it and believed nothing could improve my situation. Later, I realized this was a lie—the enemy’s lie.

Every day, there is a battle for your soul. When you are sick—whether physically, spiritually, or mentally—the enemy, who prowls around like a lion stalking its prey, senses your weakened defenses and attacks. Predators always go after the weakest first. When you believe you don’t deserve to be loved or saved by the Creator of the universe, you make yourself an easier target.

The truth is God as deeply values those who are mentally unwell as those who are physically or spiritually unwell. Just as Scripture doesn’t rank one sin above another, it also doesn’t rank one form of sickness above another. Sin is sin. Sickness is sickness.

But we serve a God who longs to see us all redeemed!

So, if your mental health struggles have brought you to a place where you feel you don’t deserve God’s help or think you’re too broken for Him to save, know that nothing could be further from the truth. As Jesus Himself said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.”
