DAY 9 OF 10

Daniel - Pursuing Physical Health Goals through Discipline and Choices

Physical health is foundational to overall well-being, influencing not only the body but also the mind and spirit. Physical health goals typically focus on principles of stewardship, discipline, and well-being. One story that emphasizes the importance of healthy living, dietary choices, and self-discipline is the story of Daniel.

Daniel asked to be tested:
"Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see."So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.

I must be honest: I’m not quite sure I would have asked for this type of test. It’s apparent that Daniel had a strong level of commitment to healthy eating and discipline. His example provides a compelling model for pursuing physical health goals. The choice he made not only affected his physical appearance but also demonstrated the importance of honoring God with our bodies.

"At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead."

This helps us understand why it is so important to take care of our temple and why the Daniel Fast is so well-known around the globe today. When you focus on this goal, take into consideration the following:

1. Making Healthy Choices

When faced with the king’s rich food and wine, Daniel chose to eat vegetables and drink water. This decision reflects the importance of making conscious choices about what we consume. Daniel’s approach to his diet was rooted in faith and trust in God. He sought to honor God through his choices, showing that physical health goals can also be a way to glorify God and care for the body as His temple.

2. Discipline in Daily Life

Daniel and his companions were offered rich foods, but Daniel’s decision required discipline and courage, especially in a foreign land where he could have easily compromised. Pursuing physical health often requires us to be disciplined in our routines, whether it’s through diet, exercise, or sleep.

What areas in your life could benefit from greater discipline regarding your physical health? Daniel’s decision demonstrated self-control, discipline, and a willingness to prioritize his convictions over indulgence. His example encourages us to be intentional and disciplined in our dietary choices, aligning them with our values and goals.

3. Honoring God with Our Bodies

Paul reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. This means that how we care for our physical health is a spiritual matter as well. Reflect on how your physical health choices can be an act of worship and gratitude to God. Daniel’s story emphasizes that physical health is part of holistic well-being, which includes spiritual, mental, and emotional health. By stewarding his body well, Daniel demonstrated his commitment to being effective in his God-given role and purpose.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for giving me guidance and helping me commit to my physical health. There are choices that honor You and promote my well-being. I praise You for showing me the way. Discipline to pursue healthy habits is transparent, and I need Your guidance to do it well. May my physical health reflect my love for You and my body as a temple of the Holy Spirit. May I receive and accept that truth and live it boldly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
