Guided by Grace: Vision Casting With Purpose

DAY 2 OF 10

Moses - Accountability in Vision and Goals

God has given each of us a purpose. When we understand what that is, having someone alongside us to be accountable is a part of the process. Just like Moses, you first have to ask yourself,” Are you willing to lay down your plan for God’s plan? Second, are you willing to adjust accordingly when needed? Third, are you willing to allow God to show himself faithful to what he has for you? In the middle of all of this is patience and trust.

Before a plan can be mapped out, the fourth question you have to ask yourself is, “Are you willing to be accountable to the plan?” This is one of the hardest steps to walk out effectively. You might think the person assigned to you to help you stay accountable might not grant you grace, and you find yourself stressed out in the process. In all truth accountability is a tough part in walking out the vision. You and your accountability partner have to lay down your pride and submit to supporting one another with grace so you can be true to the vision.

We see that in the story of Moses. God gave him the role of leader. He was tasked with a monumental vision: leading the Israelites out of Egypt and toward the Promised Land. However, as we see in the encounter with Jethro, his father-in-law, while Moses was the leader, he faced a crucial lesson in accountability to continue to walk out God’s plan. In Exodus 18:17-21 (NIV) "Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to Him. Teach them His decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave. But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.”

Jethro recognized how stressed Moses was in walking out the vision. He was the voice of reason and Moses’s accountability. He saw what it was doing to him both physically and mentally. He knew something needed to change so that Moses could continue to be the great Leader God called him to be. As we each understand how invaluable accountability can be for each of us we understand that there are guides that will allow us to move with patience, endurance, and humility.

1. Recognize Limitations:

Moses was a man of great vision, but even he was not meant to carry the burden alone nor are we, as we see in verse 18: “The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.”Jethro’s wise counsel reminds us of the importance of understanding the vision while also recognizing our limitations. Too often, we try to take on too much, believing we can handle it all. This mindset can lead to exhaustion, frustration, and even derailment. Accountability will help us remain humble, showing us when to lead, delegate, and lay our burdens down before God.

2. Accountability Role:

Jethro’s advice to Moses to appoint capable leaders was pivotal. By delegating responsibilities, Moses not only lightened his load but empowered others to step into their roles. Similarly, in our journey toward achieving goals, having an accountability partner offers support, encouragement, and wisdom. This allows us to stay focused and on track. This shared commitment ensures we remain faithful to the vision God has given us.

3. Building a Supportive Community:

In following Jethro’s guidance, Moses also built something larger than himself—a supportive community. This structured approach to leadership empowered and strengthened to walk in their purpose. When we intentionally surround ourselves with people who are trustworthy with the vision, we create an environment that builds confidence for the team surrounding us. When accountability is at the helm it inspires the community and fosters growth.

As we look at Moses’ story, let us seek God’s guidance in building supportive relationships and embracing accountability in our lives to carry out the vision.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Thank You for the vision You’ve placed in our hearts. Teach us to recognize our limitations and to lean on the wisdom and strength of those You’ve placed in our lives. Help us to embrace accountability, knowing it is a tool You use to keep us humble and focused. Surround us with a community that encourages growth and the ability to pursue our goals in alignment with Your will. May we be faithful stewards of the vision You’ve entrusted to us, always walking in obedience and grace.
