How to Incorporate Life Long Learning Into Your New Year

DAY 1 OF 5

Day 1: Asking God for Wisdom

I committed to lifelong learning when I realised that God’s world is multidimensional. Life is full of many colours and their shades, and as a full-time poet, I spend my life exploring the nuances of life: the why’s, the what for’s, and the what now’s.

Lifelong learning involves broadening your intellectual, emotional, and spiritual understanding of the world to better grasp life, people, and situations. This concept is biblical. To grow in wisdom, we must engage with various cultures, contexts, and topics—not just for understanding but for applying that knowledge effectively.

Jesus exemplifies this in Luke 2:52, which says He grew in wisdom, stature, and favour with God and man. Earlier, we see Him in the temple courts, listening and asking questions—learning through engagement and curiosity. Similarly, in Daniel 1:17, God gave Daniel and his friends knowledge and understanding, and King Solomon famously asked for wisdom to lead God’s people well.

To be lifelong learners, we must do two key things: seek wisdom from God, the ultimate source, and cultivate a posture of listening and asking meaningful questions. True learning isn’t just about acquiring head knowledge but transforming it into wisdom and heart knowledge (when I refer to heart knowledge I mean it in the sense of developing emotional maturity that compliments our biblical wisdom). Wisdom not only informs but also guides us towards sound judgment and proper action. Learning without application is incomplete; wisdom ensures that what we learn becomes fruitful in our lives.

Read through the scriptures and meditate on them. Prepare your heart for tomorrow as we begin to look deeper into what lifelong learning looks like.
