The Way to Follow Jesus According to the Gospel of Luke

DAY 19 OF 24

Day 19 - Luke 21

Stay Alert

If we're not careful, we get distracted and deceived by the outward appearance of what seems to be of God. But is it? Or is it man's attempt to be godly or religious?

Jesus pointed out the rich people showing off giving their tithes and offerings. In contrast, He said the poor widow gave more than all the rest of them because she gave everything she had while the rich gave just a tiny part of their surplus.

At the same time, the apostles were marveling over the magnificence of the temple building and religious structures. Do we marvel over the magnitude of some churches and ministries?

Whether it is the eloquent preaching of a pastor, the "programs," the “outreach,” or the beauty of the sanctuary, are we impressed by what we have and what we do for the sake of the kingdom? All of this can so easily distract us from the reality of what lies ahead i.e. the return of Jesus and His coming judgement.

Jesus warned us that we can become so caught up with what impresses us or with the “worries” of this life that we are unaware of what’s really to come. But if we “stay alert” and pray with expectation, then in spite of what we may suffer, we will have the strength needed on our journey to eternity.

Are you so preoccupied with the things of this life, that you’re not ready for the return of Jesus? Do you pray for the strength needed to remain faithful to Him no matter what comes?
