Command Me

DAY 3 OF 4

Break Through

When Fear Meets Faith

"But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, 'Lord, save me!'" This pivotal moment teaches us something profound about fear and faith. Notice that the wind hadn't suddenly become stronger. Peter had simply become more aware of it than of Jesus.

The word "saw" in the original text implies more than just visual observation; it suggests Peter began to consider, contemplate, and give weight to the wind. This shift in attention produced immediate results: fear replaced faith, and sinking replaced walking.

But there's beauty even in Peter's descent. His cry, "Lord, save me!" was just three words in English (and even shorter in Greek), yet it demonstrates that Peter knew exactly where to turn in his moment of crisis. The brevity of his prayer reminds us that fancy words aren't needed in desperate moments – just a sincere heart turning to Jesus.

Prayer Points:

  • What fears have been holding you back?
  • How quickly do you cry out to Jesus when you begin to sink?
  • Ask God to strengthen your faith in moments of fear.
  • Pray for discernment to recognize when you're beginning to sink.

Practical Exercise:

Fear-Faith Mapping:

1. Create two columns:

  • Fear Column: List your current fears.
  • Faith Column: Write a truth from God's Word that counters each fear.

2. Keep this list accessible throughout your day.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Why do you think Jesus allowed Peter to sink a little before rescuing him?
  2. What can we learn from the speed of Jesus' response to Peter's cry?
  3. How has God used your past moments of fear to strengthen your faith?
