UNENDING FAITHFULNESS
How do I describe the faithfulness of God?
Even on the days that feel impossible or in the long seasons when it seems that winter will never break into spring, there is scripture after scripture about God’s faithful nature. Every scribe, writer, and prophet throughout the Word of God communicates this facet of His unending love for His people.
Psalm 89 is a profound psalm of God’s faithfulness. It was composed by Ethan the Ezrahite of the tribe of Levi, who wholeheartedly declares what he has found through a life embedded in the Lord: “I will sing of the LORD’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself…. Who is like you, LORD God Almighty? You, LORD, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you” (Psalm 89:1-2, 8).
In Psalm 119:90 also testifies to the legacy of God’s kindness: “Your faithfulness endures to all generations; you have established the earth, and it stands fast.”
I was taught as a young Christian to never question God or ask why certain things are part of my story. But as I matured in my faith, I have found that God not only invites my questions, but He delights in drawing near to me as I draw near to Him in my wonderings. Over my lifetime, if I have ever felt like I could not see the Lord, He has always made it clear through His presence and through His Word that He has never lost sight of me.
It’s sometimes hard to explain our confidence in God’s character when life is pushing us to the limits, but because I know the love of God toward me, I know He will never abandon me (Deuteronomy 31:8). When I listen to Him speak and notice Him at work even in the smallest of details, and if I write down the whispers that come in the dry seasons, my heart finds rest and great confidence again that our God Emmanuel is with us. Always.
God, thank You for being faithful even on my hardest days, even when I can’t see how or when Your promises will be fulfilled. Thank you also for understanding my questions, doubt, and pain. My thoughts and worries don’t change who You are. Amen.
