1 John

DAY 8 OF 11

Eternal life now

"The life appeared: we have seen it and testify to it, and proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and has appeared to us" 1:2.
"And this is what he promised us" – eternal life 2:25.
"Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him" 3:15.
"And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life" 5:11-12.
"I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life" 5:13.
"And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life" 5:20.

The Jewish understanding of eternal life refers not so much to a state of existence beyond death, but to the unblemished life of fellowship with God now that will last forever, even beyond death.

John 17:3 describes eternal life as knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. Christ, by this Spirit, lives within the person who believes in him, so John writes to those who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

John even goes as far as stating that this is his primary reason for writing; "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life" 5:13. (John makes a very similar statement right at the end of his gospel – John 20:31 - in which he states very clearly why he is writing the gospel.)

Take a few moments to sit still and meditate on this great verse. Repeat the phrases one by one thinking about each one, all the time praying for the Holy Spirit to teach and lead you into all truth. Then pray the verse and all that’s come to you back to our Father in heaven.

"I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."

About this Plan

1 John

It is often stated that in war: "The first casualty is truth". How can we discern genuine Christianity from false Christianity? This is the question addressed in 1 John, the letter we shall dive deep into in this plan. John writes in 1 John in the wake of a schism in the churches he oversees to help Christians like you and me navigate this leading question: what makes genuine Christianity genuine, and what are the features of false Christianity, and how can we tell the difference?
