Training Our Minds
Scripture:
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” — Philippians 4:8
Devotion:
What you fill your mind with shapes how you see the world. Please don’t mistake this for a motivational cliché - it is a Biblical principle. God designed us this way. What we dwell on, what we surround ourselves with, becomes the lens through which we view life.
Paul’s words in Philippians 4:8 invite us to fix our thoughts on what aligns with God’s character: “Whatever is lovely.. commendable ..excellent ..worthy of praise”. These reflect God’s own heart. So, here’s the big question: what would we discover if we analyzed your thoughts? How much of your mental space is spent thinking about what is true, commendable, excellent, lovely, and worthy of praise?
Living in God’s peace starts with training our minds to think like He does. It’s not automatic. When we fill our minds with His Word, focus on His goodness, and seek out the beauty in His creation, we begin to see the world as He does. We stop being consumed by negativity, fear, doubt, or cynicism. Instead, we start seeing the world with a clarity and peace that reflects the character of Jesus Christ.
The challenge for us in modern times is that our world offers endless distractions. There is no shortage of things to think about that are anything but lovely, commendable, excellent, or worthy of praise. Social media thrives on outrage and sensationalism, and news cycles are inherently designed to stir fear. So much of our entertainment often pulls us into unhelpful thoughts and patterns.
Philippians 4:8 calls us to focus our thoughts, and not to let them conform to the patterns of the world.
Take a moment today to ask yourself: What are you thinking about most often? How can you train your mind to think in line with God’s heart and character?
Questions:
- What thoughts tend to dominate your mind throughout the day, and how do they align with God’s call to focus on what is true, commendable, excellent, lovely and worthy of praise?
- How can you intentionally shift your focus from distractions like negativity, fear, or cynicism to meditating on God’s goodness and His Word?
- What practical steps can you take this week to train your mind to think in line with God’s heart and reflect His character in your daily life?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for giving me the gift of Your Word to guide my thoughts. Help me to focus on what is true, commendable, excellent, lovely and worthy of praise. Guard my mind from negativity and distractions, and teach me to see the world through Your eyes. As I dwell on Your goodness and beauty, fill me with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Let my thoughts and life reflect Your love and character each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
