One Desire: A Love for JesusSample
Day 2 - More Of Christ
Imagine you start a cleaning business and before long - it’s booming! People are coming from near and far to drop off their dirty garments. And when they return - they are always better than they could even remember! Pristinely clean.
One day - your cousin comes through the doors for a cleaning and like everyone else - they receive pristine fabrics in return.
Shortly after, this same cousin opens a cleaning business directly across the street from yours. And soon - they take more and more of the area’s business.
How would you feel? What would you do? And do you think your relationship with your cousin would be pretty much over?
Chances are that we feel the same about whatever you said! We’d be mad, confused, disappointed, frustrated - all the emotions. And we can say that family gatherings going forward wouldn’t be a piece of cake anymore.
Yet - this was not the reaction that John The Baptist had toward his cousin, Jesus Christ - our Savior. And for that, we are so grateful - because we learn so much from it!
In John 3, some disciples of John The Baptist point out that one of the men (Jesus) previously with him was now baptizing on the other side of the Jordan. In verse 26 they exclaim, “and everyone is going to him.” We don’t know exactly how these disciples were feeling - but considering that they were arguing in the verse prior to this one, it’s safe to assume that they were probably frustrated and confused by another baptizer so close by.
But John The Baptist had an incredibly unique response - one that is inspiring us thousands of years later - as he explains that he has only been preparing the way for the Messiah. He sees himself rightly as a vessel to be used & through that lens - he does not have to carry any anger of Jesus gaining more attention than him. In verse 30 he says, “He must become greater, I must become less.”
This moment between John & his disciples reminds us of the song “One Desire” by Sound Chapel. There is a line that says, “I’ve got my eyes on You and You alone,
You’re the One that I want more of,” and it is such an incredible reminder of Jesus being enough.
John’s ministry was only to pave the way for Jesus’ own - and he knew that he needed to become less so that Christ could become later. He had his eyes on Jesus alone - and that was enough for him.
Where do you need to become less - so that Jesus can become greater? Take a moment to listen to “One Desire” and just reflect.
