“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast” – 1 Peter 5:10
When we read this verse, the phrase that sticks out is “after you have suffered a little while”. Perhaps we want to ask Peter, “Why did you say that?” Why is suffering a prerequisite of “eternal glory in Christ”?
When things such as rejection, isolation, sickness, doubt, and more come into our lives, it is easy to ask the question, “How could God let this happen to me?” It certainly isn’t because he has it out for you or relishes in your suffering. Scriptures tell us it is quite the opposite!
“For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever” Ps. 117:2
God uses suffering to make us “strong, firm, and steadfast”. He uses it to teach us to rely on him. If we went through life with everything being easy, we would be quick to think “I can do this on my own.” But restoration that prepares us for eternal glory must come through suffering and a full reliance on our unshakeable God. It is a testing of our faith, proving it more precious than gold and worthy of praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. For if our Savior suffered for our salvation, and we are called to imitate him, should we not expect a life of suffering to receive eternal glory? Our times of suffering do not “earn” us our salvation, rather, they draw us closer to our Savior.
Reflection:
Looking back on your life, how has the Lord used suffering to do a good work in you? Do you feel as though it has prepared you for glory? Why or Why Not?
