Influencing Your College Campus for Jesus a 5 - Day Devotion by Shannon ThomasSample
Fun, Food, and Fellowship
The quickest way to a college student’s heart is through food! In our collegiate ministry, we noticed that when we invited students to hang out, play games, and share meals, everything changed. People who had never talked before were suddenly laughing together and making connections. People who wouldn't come to bible study or large group meetings when invited would come to a fellowship event. Fun, food, and fellowship was about creating an environment where Jesus is present in every conversation, every laugh, and every interaction. As a leader, there was something special about gathering around a table together. It reminded me of Acts 2:42, where the early church "devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer."
Food has a way of breaking down barriers, but the real magic happened when we combined food with genuine fellowship. It wasn’t just about the burgers or the games. We used these times to create a space where students felt safe, seen, and valued. Our gatherings weren’t just about the food or the fun—they were about creating spaces for real fellowship. The more comfortable they became in these settings, the more open they were to talking about deeper matters of faith. Students who were once on the fence about their faith started asking questions, sharing their hearts, and some even gave their lives to Christ after spending time in that environment. Fellowship provides a space for truth and openness. We saw walls come down, and lives begin to change, leading to genuine friendships and spiritual growth.
Fellowship is more than hanging out. It’s about creating intentional spaces where Jesus is the center of every conversation and relationship. It’s in those genuine relationships that lives are changed, and campuses are transformed. Our collegiate ministry fellowship activities became more than just a time to meet; it became a community where students could grow in faith, friendship, and fun, all centered around Jesus.
Reflection Question: How can you build stronger fellowship on your campus this week? What space can you create to build a real faith community?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the gift of fellowship. Help me create spaces where students feel seen, loved, and welcome. May our fellowship lead others into deeper relationships with You and each other.
