Decide to Thrive: Youth EditionSample
The Influence Decision: Look to Serve Others
In Mark 10:37, James and John ask Jesus for a big favor—they want to sit at His right and left in Heaven. Their idea of success was about titles and positions, but Jesus flipped the script on their thinking. He told them that greatness isn’t about power, but about serving others. “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant” (Mark 10:43-44).
Jesus taught us true leadership isn’t about being served, but about serving others. When we choose to serve, we not only grow, but we also help others grow. Servant leadership doesn’t require a title or position—it’s about using what we have to help and encourage others where we are.
Jesus demonstrated servant leadership by washing His disciples’ feet—something only the lowest servant would do (John 13). Through this act, He taught us that leadership is about humility, love, and courage. Serving isn’t always easy, but it is always rewarding.
Choosing to serve others reflects the heart of Jesus. By embracing servant leadership, we align ourselves with God’s purpose and influence others for His kingdom. True greatness comes when we choose to serve others, sometimes even when it’s difficult or costly.
Reflection: How can you serve others in a way that reflects Jesus’ love? How does focusing on others’ needs reflect Christ’s love in your life?
