Reign

DAY 10 OF 30

If you’re like most people, day in and day out, there are lots of chores and activities vying for your attention. Most of them are good. Maybe you plan to get a head start on that big work project, the one that could give your career a much-needed boost. Or maybe you’re planning on working out—that’s the healthy thing to do. Or it could be a friend in need. You promised to lend a hand, and you know they’d do the same for you. From morning until bedtime, every single day could be filled to the brim.

Martha knew this feeling. She was hosting Jesus and His disciples and knew all of the things that needed to be done. As she completed her tasks, she checked them off her mental to-do list, but still, there was more to be done. Cooking, cleaning, serving—it all needed to be done. And yet her sister, Mary, seemed free of all responsibility. She wasn’t concerned with the house or anticipating what their guests might need next. She was content, sitting and learning at the feet of Jesus. Finally, Martha decided enough was enough. She brought the matter up to Jesus, believing He would settle things, He would send Mary to help her. But Jesus did nothing of the sort. He told Martha that Mary had chosen the one thing that mattered: Him. Lord, our life to-do lists are long. Teach us to put You first on them. Always.

About this Plan

Reign

History tells many stories of drama regarding kings and queens. This governmental system of power and our fascination with it has existed throughout history—even in Biblical times. In this devotional, we’re going to take a closer look at some of the reigns of the kings who ruled over God’s people and what we can learn from the lives and reigns of the people who led God’s people over the centuries.
