What comes to your mind when you think of a king? Is it medieval times with castles that have big moats, is it a throne? Maybe what comes to your mind is the royal families of England and all the King Louis’ that have existed.
If we’re honest, the first thing that comes to mind when we hear the title “king,” probably isn’t Jesus. We might know that He is the King of Kings and believe that He sits on the Throne, at the Right Hand of God but in our minds, we think of royalty that we have seen or studied in school. The image of Jesus as King probably doesn’t come to mind because we have yet to see Him in His full Glory when He returns for His Church.
Jesus arrived on Earth, not in any royal way but in a lowly way. He was born in a manger that animals eat slop out of, at the back of an inn hidden away so no one could see Mary or Joseph while this was taking place. Mary and Joseph weren’t royalty but they believed in the God who is Higher than all and He found favor with Mary to carry the Son of God.
The story of Jesus’s first arrival on Earth is typically celebrated in the weeks leading up to Christmas every year, and it is known as Advent. Advent literally means, “coming” or “arrival.” While the story of Jesus might not seem like one of a king being born, His first coming established His Authority as King and there is nothing, no king or queen or high authority that Man can put into place that will defeat King Jesus. Jesus is the True King. Even though there may be other things that want to steal the throne of our hearts, Jesus still reigns.
This week we will be studying how the Magi knew that Jesus was king when He was born. They traveled great distances to meet Him, worship Him, and bring Him gifts to honor Him. We will be looking at the Magi’s example of humility and adoration to apply to our own lives and the Call that Jesus makes to fully surrender the “false kings” enthroned in our hearts.

About this Plan
In this Study, we will investigate Jesus’ arrival as King, Priest, and Sacrifice. Through studying these roles, we will not only be able to see the true meaning of Christmas, but also have a fuller understanding of the story of the Bible and how God becoming Man and being born as a Baby is Good News for us today!
