It Is Christmas: The Journey of the NativitySample
Day 4: The Birth in the Manger – The King Who Chose Humility
Reading: Luke 2:6-7
The Savior of the world was born in a manger, surrounded by animals and silence. There was no palace, no throne, only the smell of hay and the simplicity of the setting. This is the heart of Christmas: the King of kings chose humility as the stage for His entrance into the world.
Jesus came into the world not in splendor, but in poverty, revealing a central truth of the Gospel. As C.S. Lewis wrote: “If there is humility in God, there must be humility in us.” The Creator of the universe made Himself vulnerable, choosing the most unlikely place to be found.
God works where we least expect Him. He is not drawn to what the world values. Spurgeon said: “Jesus was born in a manger so that no human heart would be ashamed to welcome Him.” The manger symbolizes that God’s grace is not reserved for the rich or powerful; it is available to all who accept it.
Moreover, this birth challenges us to rethink our values. Tim Keller explains: “If you want to understand the Gospel, look at the manger. It is there you will see a King who gave up everything to save us.” We must reflect: What are we seeking? Comfort, status, or the God who chose humility to reveal His greatness?
Christmas is a reminder that God draws near to us, no matter how simple or broken we may be. He enters the most modest circumstances to bring redemption and purpose. He is Emmanuel, God with us—not only in the heights but also in the depths.
When we look at the manger, we are reminded of the call to live in the same way. As the apostle Paul wrote: “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself...” (Philippians 2:5-7).
May the manger teach us to recognize divine greatness in the small, the humble, and the unexpected.
Prayer:
“Lord, thank You for choosing humility to reveal Your greatness. Help me to value what truly matters and to find You, even in the simplest moments. May my life reflect the humility and surrender I see in You. Amen.”
