Dangerous Prayers

DAY 19 OF 21

BREAK ME

Break me…talk about a dangerous prayer! You may have felt broken before, or maybe you're in a season of feeling broken right now. You might be thinking, why would we ask God to break us? Being broken is the worst!

I hear you…I’ve been broken before, and it was not a pleasant experience. But there's a difference between God breaking us and being broken by anything else.

When God breaks us, He does it lovingly and gently. He has a purpose, which is always our good and His glory. He's not trying to smash you into bits or hurt you…He wants to create something beautiful. To do that, He needs to break what keeps you stuck, whether it be people, situations, or harmful behaviors.

I was broken partly due to my own actions and need to be self-sufficient and partly due to other people’s impact on my life. God was still with me, even when I stubbornly kept trying to do things all on my own. He protected me when I was self-harming and suicidal and put people in my life that helped me get to the other side. Looking back, I wonder what might have happened if I had let Him do the breaking. I wonder if I could have spared myself some heartache and pain if I had yielded to Him sooner.

Fasting is a way to partner with God in the breaking. When we fast and deny ourselves something good for something better, we begin the process of breaking up our old nature so that God can build something better in its place.

As you fast today, ask God what He wants to break in your life and for wisdom to discern what He wants to build instead.

About this Plan

Dangerous Prayers

In His most familiar prayer, Jesus uttered a four-word "dangerous prayer:" "Your will be done" (Matthew 6:10). It takes trust in God's goodness and faithfulness to pray for His will in our lives. I want to invite you to have the same heart and desire as Jesus and to follow His lead in these four words: "Your will be done."
