Mentoring Lessons: EgoSample
How Is Your Ego Today?
Who have you told about the mistakes you have made?
I learned early in my faith journey that admitting mistakes wasn’t easy or enjoyable. It can feel shameful. Sometimes I even found ways of telling others about a mistake without it sounding like one. Then I began to understand that my mistakes were excellent teachers and not to run away from them. Your ego wants you to hide them, but be open with God and wise friends and learn from your mistakes.
Let me tell you about mistakes I’ve made. In the past I’ve said too much to newspapers and magazines and caused problems for people.
When I reviewed a key strategy for the movement, I suggested it wouldn’t work, but I was completely wrong.
When preparing a global planning meeting, I didn’t know how to frame it correctly, and it failed miserably.
A close friend asked for my help in building a strategic sports camp. I said I’d help but didn’t think it would succeed. Wrong again! The sports camp was a tremendous success.
Do you want to learn? Do you want to grow your leadership gifts? Then don’t let your ego win. Admit your mistakes, and be part of a small team where you can be honest and grow from them, becoming more of what God intended you to be.
One consolation—your mistakes aren’t recorded for all to see like those in the Scriptures—Abraham, David, and so many others.
Scripture to Ponder: Proverbs 16:18
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
Key Lesson: If you want to grow as a leader, sit with your team and learn from your mistakes. If your ego keeps you from doing so, be aware you have a problem that needs good counsel.
