God's Heart for Justice: A 5-Day Devotional on Compassion and ActionSample
Justice Is a Biblical Mandate
God, what do you want me to do?
It’s a question we’ve most likely asked at one time or another. I know I did once I joined the fight against modern day slavery. It’s a question that the Prophet Micah once answered: “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”¹
At the time, Israel’s leaders were oppressing and exploiting the weak and vulnerable. They were depriving people of their security and their hope. And Micah plainly stated what the people of God were to do. They were to “do justice.”
For us, as followers of Jesus, doing justice is a command woven throughout Scripture. It’s an essential expression of God’s heart in action. It’s not a social cause, but a divine mandate rooted in who God is. It’s about consistent, faithful obedience to God’s call to care for the oppressed, the forgotten and the marginalized—including the victims of human trafficking.
It is both a privilege and a responsibility for us to align our lives with God’s purpose of doing justice and bringing His hope to those in need. It’s how we demonstrate God’s love to a broken and dying world.
Reflection
Where is God showing you from Scripture that he wants you to pursue justice in your community today?
Prayer
Lord, help me to pursue justice as you command. Teach me to care for the vulnerable and reflect your love through my actions. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
